About the Opportunity:
Our client is a construction management firm supporting a large institutional facilities modernization program in Los Angeles. They are seeking a Senior Design Manager to lead the design function across major K-12 and public infrastructure projects, working closely with architects, engineers, and construction teams to ensure quality, compliance, and performance.
This is a full-time, on-site leadership role within a high-profile capital program.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and direct all design activities for modernization and critical facilities projects
Serve as the senior design professional for quality, compliance, and technical oversight
Manage multiple architectural and engineering firms from concept through final design approval
Ensure designs comply with functional programs, budgets, environmental regulations, and legal requirements
Coordinate design submissions and approvals with state and regulatory authorities
Establish and manage the design review, approval, and documentation process
Control design scope, schedules, and cost impacts across multiple concurrent projects
Select and recommend architectural firms from pre-qualified firm rosters
Provide clear direction on design goals, standards, budgets, and schedules
Coordinate with construction, safety, environmental, and facilities operations teams
Participate in community outreach and stakeholder engagement related to facility design
Develop and support training, seminars, and best-practice sharing for design teams
MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum 15 years of professional experience in facilities design management or capital project planning, including:
Design management
Contract administration
Cost estimating
Scheduling
Minimum 5 years of experience supporting K-12 educational facilities or comparable large institutional campuses
Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or Engineering
Active California license as either:
Registered Architect (CA), or
Professional Engineer (CA)
Ability to work on-site full time in Los Angeles
Preferred Qualifications (Not mandatory)
Master’s degree in Architecture or Engineering
Experience managing large public-sector or institutional capital programs
Experience coordinating with state building and safety authorities
Required Skills:
Senior-level architectural and engineering judgment
Strong design governance and quality control capability
Ability to manage multiple firms, stakeholders, and regulatory bodies
Excellent documentation and decision-tracking discipline
Ability to operate in high-visibility, deadline-driven environments
Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical audiences
